“Photogrammetry”

Below: Subject Sarah sits patiently, one of the better attempts we had in trying this technique.
At this point the group has decided that we will be producing some or several types of physical avatar  / sculpture for the final deliverable. We want it to address homogenized beauty standards, and the quest for perfection in the modern world.

We wonder if we can base the sculpture or sculptures on our actual faces because we have been experimenting so much with them, and we all have such different features it could be a good launching point. But how would we do this?

KP suggests a technique called Photogrammetry to try and capture our unique selves. So we decided to give it a try.

I
n essence, you must take a large number of photos, all around the subject, from as many angles as possible. Then using a programmed algorithm the photos are stitched together and assembled into one 3D model of the subject.

Here are some additional screenshots of the process along w/ a bit of the photoshoot.
We thought generally it was remarkable that it worked, at all.
That said, we don’t feel it’s a time effecient technique for us. Likely we won’t get the detail we want and it will take up too much of our resources when we could use standard models instead.

Other things we noticed: The photogrammetry did really well with some aspects and really poorly with others. We were astounded at the color and texture, even intricate patterns of Sarah’s scarves, showed up in detail in the final result.

But it had a much harder time with actual features that blended together. We could never really get her face smoothly done.

A fascinating technique and a really cool experience today. Enjoyed playing around with the group immensely.
