CYCLE 1

Avatars, Accomplices & Alter Egos
September 20 – October 27 2017

the best laid plans...

Initially we planned on doing 3 sculptures. A sound sculpture, a skin sculpture, and a “puzzle” sculpture.
However we’re realizing A) that the sound sculpture is going to take longer time/more investment than planned (see below, regarding Styrofoam Steve) and that it also already answers some of the questions we would pose for the puzzle sculpture. We’d likely just be repeating ourselves in a less resolved way.

At this point we are thinking the puzzle skull will be nixed. Not 100% but probable.

Meet Styrofoam Steve

As the base for the sound sculpture, we agreed that an existing styrofoam head would be a great start. We ordered one off Amazon (although later that same week I happened to see rows of these at Hobby Craft whilst gathering materials...still think we made the right choice as those ones are awkwardly “feminized.” creepy beauty heads.)

Meet Steve!

Here is the actual styrofoam Steve. I thought we’d be able to use the heat tool in the prototyping lab to slice out the pieces we wanted “removed” (marked by tape here.) And gut the rest of the skull. But we soon learned that was nowhere near precise enough of a tool for us in this instance. And the Styrofoam material also dissolves/crumbles easily. So...Plan B??

After getting advice in the lab, we realized we still had enough time to plot out an actual 3d sculpture w/ the pieces missing, and print the pieces separately. Sadly Steve would never become a final piece. Luckily for him he gets to live on and keep watch over the project for the rest of the cycle. Good on you Steve.
